Precisa Balance Assembly and Density Kit Guide

A density kit allows balance users to easily and reliably determine density. Density measurement is an important indicator of the quality of a product. Any changes in density can highlight the deterioration of a material or product. Accurate and reliable density measurement is therefore vital to determining the quality of products.

Our quick video guide below provides some useful advice on how to assemble your balance and install your density kit to get the most out of your balance.

Contents of the Density Kit include:

  • Pedestal
  • Support Frame
  • Glass Breaker
  • Double Cup
  • Thermometer
  • Inner Plate

Assembling the Balance

  1. Take the top of the draftshield off by pulling out the small metal clips at the back of the draftshield.
  2. Carefully pull the glass draftshield upwards, and place to one side.
  3. Carefully push the connector board for the automatic draftshield into the hole and socket located within the balance housing.
  4. Ensure alignment with the tab into the socket.
  5. If installation is correct, then the draftshield should sit flush atop the balance.
  6. Spin the baseplate around (by hand) until the holes are aligned with the mounts for the screws.
  7. Use the guides (metal cylinders) to make the alignment and insertion of the screws easier and reduce risk of crossthreading or misalignment.
  8. Using a blade screwdriver, tighten screws up until hand tight.
  9. Insert the metal disc, round pan and circular cover which protects the pan into the area in the centre of the balance.
  10. Once fitted, place the glass draftshield into the slot.
  11. The semi-circle should be facing you to allow the draftshield to rotate left and right without any restriction.
  12. Now it is in place, put the top cover on to the draftshield.
  13. Once in place, push the metal clips in. if they do not easily clip in, then it is indicative that the draftshield is not sitting correctly.
  14. Now it’s fitted and secured, apply power to the balance with the supplied power cable and adaptor.
  15. Adjust the adaptive feet at the back of the balance to ensure it is level.
  16. The unit should be allowed to warm up for at least 40 minutes prior to any measurements being performed. This ensures the stability of the unit.

Installation of Density Kit

Contents of the density kit should include:

  • Pedestal
  • Support Frame
  • Glass Breaker
  • Double Cup
  • Thermometer
  • Inner Plate
  1. Open the draftshield, then power off the balance.
  2. The setting to open/close the draftshield is on the left hand side of the unit.
  3. The draftshield opens on the right.
  4. Install bottom pan support.
  5. With the power off, place cradle into the balance.
  6. Align to 180 degrees for easy access, and place pedestal into the balance.
  7. Place the beaker into the centre of the balance.
  8. Fill with approx. 200ml of water.
  9. Place the thermometer into the beaker.
  10. Make sure that the bulb is below water level and fully immersed.
  11. Ensure the bulb is as far from the double density cup as possible.
  12. Place double cup onto the cradle.
  13. Ensure bottom cup is immersed in the water.
  14. Turn on the power using the button on the top left.

Installation of HID Cable Kit

  1. Connect DB9 Male connector to rear of your balance.
  2. Plug USB Cable into any port on your PC.
  3. Open up Excel (or equivalent).
  4. Press the Print button to see data on the worksheet.
  5. Within the Density Determination menu, press the second button on the left.
  6. Use the arrows to amend any items. For example, media used for density measurements.

Setting Density Measurement

  1. Press and hold the highlighted blue button on the balance keyboard for 3 seconds. This will bring up the Applications menu.
  2. Press the down arrow key once. This key is found on the bottom left hand side of the balance.
  3. Press the button to select Density Determination.
  4. The default screen for Density Determination will appear.
  5. If using for the first time, or, if you have changed the environmental conditions or water, select the Temp H2O option.
  6. Using the thermometer take the water temperature.
  7. Enter the reading using the bottom keys and press enter when complete.
  8. Press the Start button to start a measurement.
  9. Ensure the draftshield is closed.
  10. When the unit is stable, press the Tare button.
  11. If the unit is unstable then it is indicative that something is not correct with the balance installation.
  12. Open the Draftshield by placing your hand over the sensor on the left.
  13. Place solid sample into the top cup.
  14. In the video example above, we are using a nut.
  15. When stable, press Assume.
  16. The balance will then prompt you to place the sample in the lower cup.
  17. Once the reading is stable, press Assume.
  18. Density of the solid is now displayed on the screen.
  19. To start a new measurement, press New/Quit.
  20. New Determination window will be shown.
  21. Select Yes, No, or Cancel.
